when I came out from an afternoon performance of ‘Wicked’, I gained an unexpected education regarding the ins & outs of travelling on public transport. All these buses became crowded. I was fascinated that so many people were occupied with their smartphones. There was very little interaction between the passengers. The lady next to me was playing solitaire on her phone. I thought to myself, just a couple of weeks ago this city was flooded, & strangers came out to help strangers clean up & recover. They behaved as if they were all best mates. It was amazing. Yet look at us now…

I’m amazed how good the part of Queensland in your area — considering the days of news of flooding and the cyclone! Re the people in buses: Maybe it’s a case of respecting strangers’ privacy? I have no problems with people keeping to themselves in buses — it’s the ones who are rude in terms of hogging space, not giving up seats to the elderly, etc. that irritate me!
